When you’re trying to grow your business, it’s easy to feel the pull of big, shiny money goals. “Earn 100K in 100 days” can be VERY motivating (who wouldn’t love to know how to increase their income quickly? Me!).
But if you’re a sensitive solopreneur, focusing on big money goals might actually hold you back more than help you grow.
This has been the case for me repeatedly when I’ve done expensive masterminds and worked with impossible goals.
How your nervous system feels about big goals matters
Big goals are meant to inspire you—to ignite your problem-solving abilities and encourage bold decisions. The idea is that aiming high helps you discover creative solutions and take actions you never thought possible.
But here’s the catch: big goals can sometimes backfire, sabotaging your growth instead of fueling it.
Rather than creating clarity and confidence, they can set unrealistic expectations that trigger stress or even a trauma response.
You end up trying to do too much, too fast.
What Happens When Big Goals Trigger Your Nervous System
The result? You lose access to your creativity and excitement. Instead of feeling empowered, you end up in survival mode: fight, flight, or freeze.
- Fight: Hustling harder, working long hours, or forcing progress without a clear strategy.
- Flight: Avoiding the goal altogether because it feels overwhelming.
- Freeze: Feeling stuck, paralyzed by the pressure to succeed.
In any of these states, your creativity and excitement take a nosedive. Your energy shifts from meaningful work to simply trying to calm your stress and self-regulate.
And the result? Progress slows, your money goals slip further out of reach, and the cycle of frustration begins again.
The Long-Term Impact: Goal Trauma
Repeated attempts at this can lead to goal trauma—where the very act of setting goals feels heavy or overwhelming because of past experiences of falling short.
Over time, these disappointments can fuel limiting beliefs:
- “I’m a failure.”
- “I’m terrible at making money.”
- “I’ll never get this right.”
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “insert your favorite limiting belief here.”
Sound familiar? It’s exhausting—and disheartening.
Bleeeehhhhh
If this is you, breathe deep my friend.
Let it all out on the next exhale.
You are not alone.
Big hugs.
Ok, ready to do something about this? Yes!
This is not an argument for you to abandon setting goals.
It’s an invitation to redefine your relationship with goal-setting in a way that truly supports you.
Your sensitivity is not a limitation—it’s a gift. And just because you approach life differently doesn’t mean you can’t dream big. These suggestions are here to help you honor your unique energy and use goals as tools for growth, not self-sabotage.
1. Set Aligned Goals
Goals don’t need to be overwhelming or dictated by someone else’s standards. True alignment comes from choosing targets that honor your values, energy, and current life circumstances.
Start by asking yourself:
- Does this goal feel exciting or draining?
- Is it a reflection of what I want—or what I think I should want?
- Am I choosing a pace and scope that fits my capacity?
Tools like Human Design or intuitive journaling can help you understand your natural flow and craft goals that feel supportive, not stifling.
Aligned goals create a foundation for sustainable growth that feels empowering instead of exhausting.
2. Shift Your Relationship With Goals
Instead of seeing goals as a rigid measure of success, think of them as guiding stars.
Goals are there to give you direction, not judgment. They should spark curiosity, inspire exploration, and provide moments of celebration—or opportunities to rethink and refine.
Try asking yourself:
- What did I learn from working toward this goal?
- What can I celebrate right now, even if the goal isn’t met yet?
- How can I adjust my approach to feel more aligned?
This shift helps you let go of the pressure to be perfect and embrace the process of growth.
3. Build Your Capacity at a Sustainable Pace
Big dreams require big energy, but you don’t have to do it all at once. Growth happens step by step, and the journey will stretch you—but it shouldn’t break you.
Pay attention to your body and nervous system. When you notice stress or burnout creeping in, pause. Adjust. Ask:
- What do I need to feel supported right now?
- How can I honor my energy while still moving forward?
Give yourself permission to grow in a way that feels kind and sustainable.
4. Make Sure Your Basic Needs Are Met
Before aiming for the stars, ensure your foundation is solid.
Do you have enough financial stability to cover your needs? Is your schedule supportive of your well-being? When you start from a place of security, it’s easier to step into growth with clarity and confidence.
When your basic needs are met, your nervous system can relax—and you’ll free up energy for creativity and resilience.
5. Cull Outside Voices
We live in a world of endless advice. But too much input can drown out your intuition.
Be selective about who you listen to. Seek out mentors, resources, and communities that resonate with your values and honor your sensitive, human-centered approach to life and business.
Unfollow accounts or step away from resources that push hustle culture or make you feel “less than.” Your path is your own—and no one else’s timeline or goals matter here.
6. Lean Into Support
You don’t have to do this alone. Growth is easier and more joyful when you surround yourself with the right kind of support.
Find mentors, coaches, or communities that truly understand you. The right support system will encourage you to stretch your limits without pushing you into overwhelm. They’ll remind you that you’re capable and that your pace is just right.
This isn’t about avoiding discomfort—it’s about choosing a path that empowers you to thrive. Sensitive solopreneurs canachieve their goals—but it starts with changing the way you set them, approach them, and nurture yourself along the way.
Big dreams are possible for you. You’ve got this. ❤️
