Scaling from Safety: Why nervous system regulation is the missing link in sustainable business growth

TL;DR: You’ve done everything “right.” You’ve taken the courses, built the funnels, stayed consistent – yet it still feels like you’re running in place.

Some days you’re on fire with ideas; other days you can’t bring yourself to open your laptop. You keep wondering, “Why can’t I sustain my momentum?” and “Will I ever get past this??”.

If that sounds familiar, it’s not because your strategy isn’t working.

There’s something deeper happening, something most entrepreneurs never think to look at.

Want to know what it is?

It’s the state of your nervous system as you implement your strategy, especially if you’re a heart-led business owner.

Understanding how your nervous system affects your ability to scale is the key to getting unstuck. Growth that feels good begins when you get intentional about your body and your business finally working with each other.

Read on to learn more about the link between your nervous system & your next business steps.

For a long time, I was stuck in a cycle of excitement-burnout-failure in my own businesses.

I’d listen to every piece of traditional business advice I could find. Read the SBA guides. Take the courses. Learn the strategies. Do the insanely expensive business coaching programs.

I’d always be excited in the beginning. I’d go all-in implementing new ideas and strategies because “these folx are successful, so this will totally work for me”.

Without fail, I’d eventually start thinking, “this isn’t working. It won’t work for me…. Nothing will ever work for me.”

Then I’d turn the mindset tools up to 11 and try to coach myself out of it. I’d get coaching from an expert coach and feel better for a little bit, thanks to their perspective and energy.

But it never lasted.

That’s because the deeper patterns of stress (and trauma) weren’t being addressed.

My nervous system was freaked out by a lot of the business strategy I had learned – and I was completely ignoring it. So, when I went to implement strategies, even though I was doing everything right, it wouldn’t work for me in a sustainable way.

I would get exhausted or hopeless, even if I got good results.

Little did I know these are textbook symptoms of stress responses, according to Stephen Porges’s Polyvagal Theory, which is the science of how our autonomic nervous system affects our behavior.

Most entrepreneurs don’t realize that they’re running their business from a stress response – like ALL THE TIME.

Some are in constant motion – trying to fix, adjust, or optimize everything. These folx are scared to take time off.

Others feel flat and disconnected, unable to muster the energy to show up. These folx have to force themselves to work.

You might recognize one of those patterns in yourself. Maybe both.

Learning about polyvagal theory gave me a language for what I’d been living.

There are moments when you feel sped up – like there’s never enough time, and your mind races to stay ahead. That’s a sympathetic pattern (hypervigilant/fight or flight), and it’s your body’s way of saying “I’m not safe unless I keep moving.” This leads to overworking, overlearning, overposting, etc.

And there are moments when you feel like you can’t find any motivation at all. You know what you should be doing, but the thought of it makes you want to stay in bed and scroll on your phone. That’s the dorsal pattern (freeze, collapsed), the body saying “Ugh, I don’t have the energy. It wouldn’t work anyways. No one sees me anyways. What’s the point?”

Neither state is wrong or bad. They’re both intelligent ways your system tries to protect and communicate with you. But they aren’t great places to lead a business from.

Traditional business spaces often tell us to push through these moments.

Be consistent. Take action anyway. Just do the thing and you’ll get the results.

But what I’ve seen – in myself and in my clients – is that when your body doesn’t feel safe, the way forward isn’t forcing a better mindset or investing your savings in a fancy new business strategy.

It’s having a grounded nervous system, especially if you’re a sensitive entrepreneur.

Safety has to come first.

Polyvagal theory calls this the ventral vagal nervous system state.

Safety doesn’t mean everything is calm or perfect. It means that your body can stay present while things are uncertain. It means your system starts to trust that it can move forward without bracing for failure.

When you feel safer, the way that your brain operates changes.

Your creativity returns.
You can see possibilities again.
You make decisions from grounded clarity, not urgency & pressure.
Your brain & body have increased capacity for perceiving opportunities, prioritizing energy & communicating with others in an empowered way.

This is the foundation for sustainable scaling.

Root and Rise: Scaling from regulation

In my own work, I’ve come to think of nervous system regulation as a strategy that I call “Root and Rise.”

Before we can rise into the next level of business – new income, visibility, leadership – we have to feel rooted.

Rooted in our bodies, our rhythms, and the pace that actually nourishes us.

Rooting doesn’t slow you down. It’s not something that happens “after you get things done”. It’s something you do beforehand in order to get things done (especially the right things).

You can download my free Root and Rise Nervous System Checklist here. This quick reset helps you move from survival mode to a grounded, creative, and connected state.

It’s a simple process that includes:

  1. Self-evaluation: noticing where you are on the nervous system ladder (sympathetic, dorsal, or ventral).
  2. Grounding: simple practices that calm the body – breath, orientation, somatic release.
  3. Re-storying: shifting the internal dialogue to something that supports possibility instead of pressure.

From regulation comes aligned strategy

The more I’ve worked this way, the more I’ve realized that nervous system regulation is business strategy.

Because when you feel safe enough to stay present, your ideas get clearer.
Your intuition gets louder.
And the structure you build around your business starts to reflect who you truly are – not who you think you have to be or someone else’s $10k strategy that feels like poo.

That’s the difference between scaling from force and scaling from flow.
